History Rewind ⏪️
In today's edition of History Rewind, we're revisiting some of Mont Belvieu's "firsts." Back in the day, a trip to the bank wasn't just a quick errand - it meant hitching up your horse and buggy for a dusty 10-mile journey to Baytown. Imagine making that trek just to deposit your weekly earnings! That changed in August of 1920, when the area received its first chartered bank called Guaranty State Bank. By December 1924, it had resources totaling $176,460.91. The entire operation ran on the power of just four people - one hardworking cashier and three directors, including the trusted local physician, Dr. A.R. Shearer. 💵
In November 1925, the bank was reorganized and the name was changed to Mont Belvieu State Bank until it merged with the Security States Bank of Goose Creek in 1933, and all activities moved to Baytown.
In February 1971, Mont Belvieu State Bank reopened its doors for business. On opening day, deposits totaled $453,350.24 with total assets of $753,350.24. Not too shabby for a town where the median income was around $10,000 a year!
The first taste of a city's soul is in the small details, the hidden corners where your own story begins to weave.
