History Rewind ⏪️

Revisiting Our Firsts: Early 1900’s

In a previous segment of History Rewind, we took a stroll down memory lane to explore the story behind the name Barbers Hill and its transformation into Mont Belvieu. Not only was Zachary Taylor Winfree the original applicant for the post office and name change to Mont Belvieu, but he also became the first postmaster in 1890. 🏣 At first, the post office was run right out of his home, and it included a weekly horseback ride to Dayton. 🐎

Fast forward to 1918, and Barbers Hill oil production was buzzing with activity, providing jobs for most of the men in the area. In 1919, the F.M. Busch Drug Store opened its doors, which later became known as Amos Fisher's drug store. By 1920, Mont Belvieu had a small but growing population, estimated at 20 people!

In 1923, J.B. Casey purchased a grocery store from Ross Williams and relocated his family to Barbers Hill. He served as the postmaster for a while, running the post office from his store. 📫️

Then in 1927, the Langston brothers, J.L. and M.L., decided to open their own grocery store, contributing to the growth of the town. Meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Lake started a cleaners next to Amos Fisher's drug store until Jim Bo Wooldridge came along, purchased it, and renamed it Mont Belvieu Cleaners.

Study the past if you would define the future.

Sammie’s’ Buddy Bench Project | Recycle & Help Kids ♻️

Chambers County has partnered with Niagara Cares and the NRPA to collect Level 2 recycling material that will be recycled and the funds used to create "Buddy Benches." Sammie’s Buddy Bench non-profit was founded in 2017 by Sammie, who found out about Buddy Benches one summer at VBS.

What is a buddy bench? Sammie explains, "If someone is lonely they can go sit on the bench and others know to go up and ask them to play." They foster the idea of making and creating new friendships. The hope with this project is to earn enough money to purchase 4 Buddy Benches to be distributed in Chambers County parks.

Items are accepted until March 15th. Level 2 recycling materials are made with high-density polyethylene and include things like milk jugs, shampoo bottles, and detergent bottles. Each bottle should have the number 2 on them and be cleaned well with water. Drop your items off at the Chambers County box site in Cove or Beach City. 💙
