Chambers County Among Finalists for $1 Billion Solar Manufacturing Plant
Chambers County is competing for what could become Barbers Hill ISD's largest industrial project in its 95-year history. Talon PV has named the county as a finalist for its $1 billion solar cell manufacturing facility, alongside sites in Oklahoma and Indiana.
The plant would create 1,000 high-paying jobs and manufacture advanced TOPCon solar cells with 4 gigawatts capacity. Talon PV Co-Founder Brandon Dewan cited Chambers County's adequate power, water, and workforce infrastructure as key advantages, along with the welcoming community.
"They would bring a significant number of quality jobs and be an asset to our community," said Barbers Hill Superintendent Dr. Greg Poole.
If selected, construction would begin after tax incentive negotiations conclude in the next six months. The company expects production to start in 2026, reaching full capacity by 2027. Talon PV has committed to workforce development programs with local educational institutions and active community involvement.
With financing secured and equipment partners selected, the company is ready to break ground shortly after making its final decision.

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.

Registration Open for Barbers Hill Pre-K and Kindergarten Programs
Parents looking to enroll their children in Barbers Hill pre-K, tuition-based pre-K, and kindergarten, have until April 30th to register for the 2025-2026 school year. The district's tuition-based pre-K program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to develop the whole child through experiential learning, social-emotional development, strong teacher-child relationships, and home-school connections.
All teachers hold state certification in Early Childhood Education. The program costs $750 monthly for 10 months, covering breakfast, lunch, field trips, and initial school supplies. A $100 application fee is required upon submission. Parents can complete the registration process electronically. Families interested in securing a spot for the upcoming academic year are encouraged to apply before the April 30 deadline.

Barbers Hill Senior Receives Mills Family Scholarship
Barbers Hill High School senior Jason Lane Farish has been named the second recipient of the $10,000 Mills Family Scholarship. The award, established in 2022 by the Barbers Hill Education Foundation, supports district students pursuing degrees in the oil and petrochemical industries.
Farish plans to complete his process operations certification at Lee College. "The part that interests me the most is being in the plants and seeing how chemicals and products are made with the distillation columns," he said.
The scholarship recipient comes from a family with deep petrochemical industry ties, including his father's 18-year career at Lubrizol, his brother's experience at Ingina, and his grandfather's 46-year tenure at Exxon.
The scholarship honors Al Mills (Barbers Hill Class of 1959), a longtime district ambassador who passed away in 2022. Mills was known for chairing the Barbers Hill Sports Hall of Honor, and his father George served on the school board from 1945 to 1963.
